We’ve all heard the phrase, “Hurt people hurt people,” and it’s true—when someone is in pain, they sometimes project that pain onto others. It’s a tough cycle to break. But here’s the good news: just as hurt can spread, so can healing. In fact, I’d argue that love and healing always win. That’s why today, I want to focus on a different perspective: “Free people free others. Safe people shelter others. Enlightened people illuminate others.” Isn’t that a beautiful thought!? Let’s unpack it together and see what it really means for our relationships, our communities, and even for the world around us.
Hurt Might Spread, But So Can Healing
We’ve all been hurt at some point, whether it’s from a relationship, a situation, experienced trauma or even from our own inner struggles. It’s easy to feel weighed down by that pain, and sometimes, without realizing it, we pass it on. Maybe we snap at someone because we’re stressed or withdraw because we don’t feel seen. That’s where the phrase “hurt people hurt people” comes from—it’s a reflection of how trauma, anger, and fear can ripple outward.
But here’s the empowering truth: just because we’ve been hurt doesn’t mean we have to stay hurt. When we choose healing, when we choose love, we create a different kind of ripple—one that’s rooted in freedom, safety, and light.
Free People Free Others
What does it mean to be “free”? I’m not just talking about freedom in the physical sense, but the emotional and mental freedom that comes with healing. When we’ve done the hard work of freeing ourselves from the chains of past pain, anxiety, or limiting beliefs, we become a beacon for others.
Think about it: when you meet someone who is truly free in their own heart and mind, don’t you feel inspired? Their unbridled authenticity gives you permission to believe that you, too, can be free. When we show others that it’s possible to break free from old patterns, we pave the way for them to step into their own healing journey.
It’s like a ripple in a pond—when one person becomes free, they inspire freedom and true authenticity in others. This is how movements are started, how change happens, one ripple at a time.
Safe People Shelter Others
One of the most powerful gifts you can offer someone is the feeling of safety. When we feel safe, we’re able to be vulnerable, to trust, and to grow. Safe people create environments where others can be their authentic selves without fear of judgment or rejection.
Maybe you’ve experienced this in your own life—a friend, a mentor, or a partner who makes you feel seen and understood. Those are the people who shelter others, who provide a safe harbor in the storm. They offer stability and care, not by solving all your problems, but by being there with you through them.
And here’s the beauty of it: when you feel safe, you’re more likely to extend that same safety to others. It’s contagious. You become someone others can lean on, someone who creates a ripple of security in a world that can often feel chaotic.
Enlightened People Illuminate Others
When someone has done the work to understand themselves, to dig deep into their own beliefs and values, they naturally shine light for others. This doesn’t mean having all the answers or being “perfect” in any way—it means being willing to share the lessons learned along the way.
Enlightenment isn’t about superiority; it’s about humility. It’s about using your own journey to illuminate the path for others, helping them see things more clearly. When you shine your light, you unconsciously give others permission to do the same.
Think of it this way: if you’ve ever walked down a dark path with someone holding a flashlight, their light doesn’t just help them—it helps you, too. That’s the power of enlightenment. It brightens the way for everyone around you.
What Matters
Here’s the bottom line: love and healing always win. No matter how much hurt there is in the world, it doesn’t have to define us. Yes, hurt people might hurt people, but healing is stronger. Love is stronger. The ripple effects of one person’s healing can spread so far beyond what we can see.
When we choose healing—when we choose love—we contribute to something bigger than ourselves. We create a world where people feel free, safe, and illuminated by the love around them. That’s the kind of world I want to live in, and I’m guessing you do, too. So choose to do the work for the betterment of not just yourself, but for everyone within the path of your ripple.
Let’s make that choice every day. Let’s commit to being the kind of people who free others, who shelter others, who light the way for others. Because love and healing always win. And when we embody that, we’re not just changing our own lives—we’re changing the world, one ripple at a time.
Until next time, keep shining your light. The world needs it.
